It is felt that with the wide range of paranormal groups across the world today and with the diverse number of "questing" organisations practicing, there is a case that the wood is being missed for the trees. For example there is a lot of work being undertaken with various degrees of success and expertise in investigating individual hauntings by a number of different paranormal groups. In such cases there is considerable work taken on in recording any environmental factors such as temperature or electromagnetic fluctuations as well as any historical factors such as groups attempting to identify whether the "ghost" was an actual person and whom that person actually was. However none of this really goes towards identifying exactly what a ghost may be.

Similarly in the occult world since the Golden Dawn, there have been any number of occultists studying the mysteries and often applying these results to good works. However it seems that many magicians; unlike the shamen of pre-industrial societies are not content to step out of their cosy lodge rooms and actually investigate what is out there. There are in fact a number of famous groups which actively discourage the investigation of supernatural phenomena.
There are exceptions to this, perhaps the most notable in present times being the Psychic Questing movement founded by Andrew Collins and Graham Phillips in the 1980s. Realising that over one hundred years of parapsychology has turned up exactly zero evidence for the paranormal despite the testimonies of millions of people encountering strange phenomena every day all round the world, Collins and Phillips decided to assume that the paranormal was there and work with what they had. It seems this leap of faith was one of the factors needed to revitalise the current. From the books and from personally speaking to people involved with questing, a new current was unleashed and phenomena only dreamed off by parapsychologists was encountered. In this we will follow Andrew Collins's lead and attempt to work the phenomena which presents itself rather and simply attempt to prove to the world that such phenomena exists. Throughout history no such proof has ever been produced so it would be naive to assume that it ever will. That is not to say we do not condone the use of sophisticated modern equipment in investigating the paranormal but rather that it will not be our focus, nor our primary modus operandi. Finally should such equipment prove detrimental to the investigation at hand then its use will be discontinued.
